Intelligence chiefs from the United States, Israel, and Egypt convened in Qatar, aiming to broker a cease-fire in Gaza. Beyond the immediate conflict between Israel and Hamas, these talks are under close scrutiny by Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon. The outcome could influence the potential for a second large-scale conflict in Israel’s northern region.

Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, emphasized the necessity of negotiating an end to the hostilities in Gaza to prevent further cross-border clashes between his group and Israel. Both Hezbollah and Hamas are aligned with Iran in what they refer to as “the axis of resistance,” a coalition that actively opposes Israel’s legitimacy.

In a televised address, Mr. Nasrallah affirmed that Hamas represents not only itself but the entire resistance axis in negotiations. He stated, “Hamas is negotiating on its own behalf and on behalf of the entire resistance axis, and what Hamas accepts, we accept.”

Since the conflict in Gaza erupted following an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, supported by Iran, have engaged in exchanges of fire. The violence has forced approximately 150,000 individuals in northern Israel and southern Lebanon to flee their homes. Global leaders are apprehensive that sustained hostilities could rapidly escalate into a full-blown war, further destabilizing an already tense region.

Mr. Nasrallah alluded to these apprehensions in his speech, acknowledging that numerous international delegations have visited Lebanon to explore avenues for de-escalation. He stressed, “We repeated the same words: If you want to stop the northern front, stop the fire in Gaza.”

However, progress in the cease-fire negotiations has been sluggish, and recent weeks have witnessed an uptick in skirmishes between Israel and Hezbollah. These incidents have involved cross-border incidents with drones, rockets, and airstrikes, heightening concerns of an imminent broader conflict.
