According to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union (EU), June attracted attention with record temperatures around the world. The temperature, measured 0.67 degrees above the 1991-2020 average, reached 16.66 degrees, making it the hottest June in human history.

Temperature records have continued to be broken over the past 13 months, with the global average temperature over the past 12 months being 0.76 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and 1.64 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average.

Kurnaz, one of the climate change experts, stated that the first 6 months of 2024 will be the hottest 6 months experienced worldwide, and emphasized that record-breaking temperatures will continue, surpassing 2016.

While it was stated that “the summer of 2024 could be the second or third hottest summer on record,” it is expected that the temperature records will slow down with the end of the El Nino effect. However, experts warned that temperatures would rise in the Mediterranean Basin, including Turkey, and that sudden, heavy rains could increase.

While it is stated that temperature records may be broken in rare cases during the remainder of 2024, it is generally predicted that average temperatures around the world will not remain at record levels.

Kurnaz warned that “sudden and heavy rainfalls will increase in Turkey” and that the effects of climate change will be felt more in the region.
