After the occupation of Srebrenica by Serb forces under the command of Ratko Mladic on July 11, 1995, Bosniak civilians who took refuge with Dutch soldiers under the United Nations were later handed over to the Serbs. While women and children reached the area under the control of Bosniak soldiers, at least 8,372 Bosniak men were massacred in forest areas, factories and warehouses.
In the efforts to find the missing after the war, the victims whose bodies were found in mass graves were identified and buried in a ceremony held at the Potocari Memorial Cemetery every year on July 11. With this year’s ceremony, the number of victims buried in the memorial cemetery will rise to 6,765.
