Almost two decades ago, a team of archaeologists discovered a hidden treasure beneath a parking lot in the heart of Berlin. They unearthed the remains of nearly 4,000 forgotten individuals from a long-lost church cemetery that had been paved over during the Communist regime’s reign.

Delving deep into the bones, some dating back to 1160, and examining ancient teeth, scientists made astonishing revelations. One of the most significant findings was the confirmation that the city had been inhabited much earlier than previously believed, rewriting its history.

However, the mysteries concealed within the bones were limited. With extensive research on these early Berliners now concluded, the skeletons of 100 medieval and early modern individuals, including babies, children, and adults, have found their way back to the city’s core. They are now honored in a museum, Petri Berlin, located at the very site where they were once callously covered by asphalt.

Recently, as a gesture of repentance and respect conceived by the project’s lead archaeologist, a procession took place in Berlin. A horse-drawn hearse, accompanied by 100 present-day Berliners, paraded the coffins of these ancient settlers through the city streets in a grand funeral.
