The arrival of summer has increased the use of air conditioning by holidaymakers due to the effects of heat waves, while respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia are also rapidly increasing. Altınbaş University Faculty of Medicine Chest Diseases Department Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya states that diseases related to air conditioning use are increasing, especially in hotels and holiday villages. Özkaya draws attention to the fact that children in the group are most affected by this situation.
The Relationship Between Legionnaires’ Disease and Air Conditioning
Prof. Dr. Özkaya emphasizes that “Legionnaires’ Disease”, caused by the “Legionella” bacteria spread from air conditioners, causes more pneumonia, especially in children, compared to Covid-19. Stating that this situation is worrying, Özkaya says that especially individuals with chronic diseases should be more sensitive to the use of air conditioners.
