Security measures taken for the 75th NATO Summit have been put into effect as of today. The measures taken in Washington within the scope of the summit are as follows:

  • In Washington, roads and subway stations around the White House and Congress areas were closed.
  • The Secret Service, which also protects the US President, will be responsible for the security of the leaders attending the summit.
  • The US Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the Pentagon Protection Branch will provide close protection for other foreign delegation representatives.
  • The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will provide intelligence support and prevention of physical and virtual threats.
  • The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department will be responsible for general measures in the area declared a security zone.
  • Washington National Guard troops will be participating in unarmed traffic direction efforts.

The US National Aviation Administration has issued an aviation advisory for Washington due to the 75th NATO Summit, expanding the no-fly zone. Other details are as follows:

  • Aircraft that do not comply with procedures will be blocked and their pilots may be detained and questioned.
  • Americans working and living within the secure area will enter and exit through checkpoints.
  • Freight vehicles entering the area will be checked with large X-Ray devices, then sealed and taken into the area.

Some other safety precautions include:

  • Snipers were placed on important routes within the congress area.
  • Due to intense security measures, many businesses operating in the area declared as a security zone will be closed during the congress.
  • Taxis and couriers will be allowed to operate but delays are expected as they will have to be searched at checkpoints.

General Information

The US is hosting a NATO summit for the first time in 25 years. The capital, Washington, has not seen such extensive security measures since the African Leaders’ Summit in 2022.
