Tragic Drowning Incident in Muş
The Karakaya family, living in the Bostankent village of Muş, decided to go on a picnic to the Alpaslan-1 Dam Lake to enjoy the summer. However, this pleasant day suddenly turned into tragedy when young Rabia Karakaya (13) almost drowned in the lake. Seeing Rabia fall into the water, family members quickly jumped into the lake to help.
Meanwhile, Yasin (18), Edanur (20), Fatma Karakaya (22) and Eylu Tekin (15) also entered the water and tried to save Rabia. However, these four people disappeared in a short time. The people around who noticed that their family members were missing immediately reported the situation to the authorities.
Upon notification, AFAD teams and locals were quickly dispatched to the scene. After intensive search efforts, unfortunately the lifeless bodies of Rabia, Yasin and Edanur Karakaya and Eylu Tekin were found. Search and rescue teams continued their efforts to find Fatma Hediye Karakaya until the night hours. With the contributions of AFAD Underwater Search and Rescue, National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE), gendarmerie, police and fire department teams, divers from the Underwater Group Directorate of the Bitlis Police Department Protection Branch also reached the lifeless body of Fatma Karakaya.
After the work in the water, Fatma Karakaya’s body was sent to Muş State Hospital for autopsy. Following the incident, Muş Deputy Governor Tahir Yılmaz and Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Senior Colonel Mehmet Kasım Ermiş conducted an investigation at the scene. Deputy Governor Yılmaz stated that they received information that 5 people were missing in the water at around 15:30.
Yilmaz, who followed the search and rescue efforts on site, expressed his condolences and patience to the family. He also said, “When we arrived at the scene, we found the lifeless bodies of 3 of our citizens. Later, we found our 4th citizen. As of this hour, we found our 5th citizen with the support of our divers. Forensic medicine “And the prosecutor’s office is following up on the matter. We are preparing our bodies for burial. We offer our condolences to the family.”
Bostankent village headman Ali Rıza Tekin, while giving information about the incident, said, “I called the people who know how to swim in the village. We pulled 4 people out. It is a great pain. It is a very difficult situation to lose “5 people from a family. Those who lost their lives are my uncle’s children. After the autopsy, we will bring the bodies and bury them.”
