Mobs armed with bamboo sticks and pipes clashed with supporters of Bangladesh’s recently ousted ruling party on Thursday, thwarting their efforts to gather for a significant public rally since their leader fled the nation. The attackers, predominantly affiliated with opposition parties that have suffered under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime, displayed their anger and frustration in the streets of Dhaka, the capital city.

The student protesters, who played a pivotal role in the movement that led to Ms. Hasina’s downfall, found themselves sidelined during the violence. Instead of taking an active role, they broadcasted appeals for peace and calm, which largely went unheeded amidst the chaos. This latest outbreak of violence signifies yet another chapter in the long history of vengeance that has plagued Bangladesh during its numerous periods of political unrest.

This situation presents one of the many daunting challenges confronting the newly established interim government. In the days following Ms. Hasina’s departure to India, the systematic removal of her party from governmental positions has continued unabated. Demonstrators have persistently demanded accountability for the former prime minister, particularly regarding the deaths of approximately 500 individuals during the month-long uprising, a majority of whom lost their lives during the violent crackdown she orchestrated.

On Tuesday, security forces apprehended at least two senior officials from Ms. Hasina’s administration as they attempted to flee the country by boat. Reports indicate that when these officials appeared in court on Wednesday, their legal representatives were obstructed from defending them by their opponents, perpetuating a disturbing trend of injustice that has historically favored those in power.

Additionally, Bangladesh’s army chief has seemingly corroborated reports suggesting that several leaders from Ms. Hasina’s party are being sheltered within military facilities. He stated that the military would provide refuge to anyone facing the threat of “extrajudicial action,” underscoring the complex and precarious nature of the current political landscape.
