Vice President Kamala Harris made her first public appearance following President Biden’s decision not to seek re-election. She praised Biden’s unmatched record in modern history and aimed to reintroduce herself to Americans on her terms.
During an event at the White House honoring college athletes, Harris spoke of her friendship with Beau Biden, expressing admiration for the deep love President Biden has for the country.
Harris quickly shifted focus to building her profile as the presumptive nominee, becoming a beacon of hope for Democrats in defeating former President Donald J. Trump. She raised an impressive $81 million in her first 24 hours as a candidate, secured key endorsements, and initiated efforts to engage delegates.
With just over three months until Election Day, Harris faces the task of defining herself to the American people before Republicans do it for her. She also needs to seamlessly take over the campaign infrastructure meticulously crafted by Biden over the past year.
Following the White House event, Harris visited the Biden-Harris campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Del., to meet with staff members. Reflecting on the day, she shared on social media, “One day down. 105 to go. Together, we’re going to win this.”
