UN Deputy Secretary-General Spokesperson’s Statement on the Rohingya Situation

Deputy Spokesperson of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) Stephane Dujarric, answered questions from reporters at his daily press conference. Dujarric shared important information about the situation in the Rohingya region. “The reports we have received indicate that the increased hostilities in the Rohingya (Arakan) are causing loss of life and new displacement,” he said.

Conflicts are particularly prevalent in Muslim communities Arakanprovince bordering Bangladesh MaungdawDujarric, who stated that the displacement was concentrated in the town, shared the information that “approximately 20 thousand people were displaced” in this region on August 5. In addition, in the northern region ShanHe also stated that more people were crossing from his state to Bangladesh.

“Since the end of June, conflict has flared up again, displacing around 33,000 people across four towns,” Dujarric said, adding that reports of homes and other structures being destroyed have been circulating in Myanmar’s ongoing civil conflict.

The Spokesperson of the Secretary-General also stressed that the heavy monsoon rains since the end of June had “exacerbated the already difficult humanitarian situation”. He reported that approximately 393,000 men, women and children had been affected by these natural disasters.
