The briefing typically covers essential topics such as living arrangements, security protocols, and the process of appointing ministers, ensuring a smooth transition of power.
10 Downing Street has witnessed several swift transitions in recent years. Since the previous general election five years ago, the residence has been occupied by three different Prime Ministers. Notably, Liz Truss resided at Number 10 for less than seven weeks, highlighting the dynamic nature of British politics.
Built in 1735, 10 Downing Street has served as the official residence of Britain’s Prime Ministers for centuries. While the exterior may appear modest, the interior spans across offices, living areas, and reception rooms, extending to parts of 12 Downing Street. A connecting corridor leads to Number 11, the residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Prime Ministers often personalize their living quarters, although these areas remain mostly private. When Margaret Thatcher assumed office after winning the 1979 general election, she undertook a renovation of the residence, describing the experience as “living over the shop.”
