Hamas Statement: Palestinian Prisoners Tortured in Israeli Prisons
Hamas said in a written statement that thousands of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons were subjected to inhumane treatment and torture. The statement emphasized that the horrific details and marks on the bodies of the released prisoners revealed the extent of the torture.
It was stated that the situations of the recently released journalist Muaz Amarne and athlete Muazzez Ubeyyat also proved the inhumane practices taking place in detention centers and prisons.
The testimony of Palestinian Muazzez Ubeyyat, who was held in prison for 9 months as an “administrative prisoner” by Israel, revealed the extent of the torture. According to Ubeyyat’s statement, it was stated that Israeli officials directly participated in the torture.
The ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian prisoners reveal Israel’s barbarity in its disregard for international agreements and laws. The international community is calling for urgent intervention and committees are requested to be established to investigate violations in Israeli prisons.
The Story of Muazzez Ubeyyat
Muazzez Ubeyyat, a father of five living in Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, was detained during Israel’s wave of arrests of Palestinians. He was held in administrative detention for nine months under military law.
Israel’s use of administrative detention allows Palestinians to be detained for long periods without learning of the charges, paving the way for human rights violations and torture.
Israel’s unlawful practices and inhumane treatment are drawing the ire of the international community, and calls for justice are growing.
