The Vatican announced on Friday that Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the former ambassador of the church to the United States, has been excommunicated. The decision was made due to his refusal to recognize the authority of Pope Francis and his opposition to the liberal reforms introduced after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s.

Archbishop Viganò's Controversial Stance

Archbishop Viganò has been a vocal critic of Pope Francis, publicly referring to him as a “false prophet” and a “servant of Satan.” He has also embraced right-wing conspiracy theories and praised former President Donald J. Trump. In 2018, he penned a 7,000-word letter demanding the Pope’s resignation, accusing him of covering up sexual abuse by a cardinal. Additionally, in 2015, he invited a critic of gay rights to meet the Pope in Washington, challenging Francis’ message of inclusivity.

Further Actions and Views

Subsequently, Archbishop Viganò has taken anti-vaccine stances and blamed Western “deep state” forces for instigating the conflict in Ukraine and demonizing Russia. Despite his excommunication, he retains his title but is prohibited from celebrating Mass, receiving or administering sacraments, and holding official positions within the church hierarchy.

Archbishop Viganò did not respond immediately to the Vatican’s decision. Robert Moynihan, editor of a Vatican magazine that often conveys Viganò’s views, mentioned that the Archbishop was summoned by the Vatican’s religious discipline department in June but did not appear in Rome as requested.

In a statement, Archbishop Viganò declared his refusal to recognize the tribunal’s authority and criticized the liberal changes in the church. He accused the Pope of promoting vaccines as a “crime against humanity” and denounced Francis’ support for climate initiatives and an inclusive church that is pro-immigration, eco-friendly, and LGBTQ+-friendly.

Pope Francis has also taken action against other outspoken conservative clergy members. Rev. Frank Pavone, the leader of Priests for Life, was defrocked in 2022, and Cardinal Raymond Burke, a prominent figure among Catholic traditionalists critical of Francis, was reportedly evicted from his Vatican residence last year.
