Medical professionals at the Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Center in Moncton, the largest city in New Brunswick, Canada, focused their investigation on a rare neurological disorder known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. This condition is caused by prions, misfolded proteins that lead to brain degeneration. They communicated their findings to Beatty’s children, Tim and Jill, and informed them that further tests would be conducted to confirm the post-mortem diagnosis.
Three months later, when Tim and Jill returned to the office of their father’s neurologist, Dr. Alier Marrero, they anticipated hearing the confirmation of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. However, to their astonishment, Marrero delivered unexpected news: Laurie Beatty’s test results had returned negative for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. “We were all looking at one another,” Tim recalls, “because we were all very confused.” If it wasn’t Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease that had claimed their father’s life, then what could it possibly be?
