Embracing the Italian Way of Life

In a world increasingly dominated by the relentless demands of capitalism and the pressures of relentless work schedules, the late British television personality, Robin Leach, pointed out a refreshing contrast found in Italy. He remarked that in this beautiful country, life is not merely about labor; it is intricately woven with the pleasures of food and wine.

In the picturesque northeast of Italy lies Valdobbiadene, a charming rural town with a population of around 10,000, renowned for its exquisite Prosecco. Here, the mayor, Luciano Fregonese, embodies the essence of this lifestyle. In an interview, with the assistance of a translator, he candidly shared his experiences.

“It’s not easy,” began Mayor Fregonese. “Every weekend, we have one, two, or even three events to attend. At each gathering, it’s customary to enjoy a glass of wine or Prosecco, accompanied by delicious food.” He chuckled, acknowledging the communal spirit that makes it difficult to decline such invitations. “It’s hard to say ‘no.’”

The challenges of being a three-term mayor in this lush region have prompted Mr. Fregonese to take proactive steps regarding his health. Recognizing the toll his responsibilities were taking on him, he introduced a new initiative into his weekly routine: Thursday walks.

What began as a lighthearted jest among friends about his expanding waistline soon transformed into a genuine commitment to his well-being. Since being elected mayor for the first time in 2014, the spirited 47-year-old has noticed an increase in his weight, which has only heightened his concern for his health, particularly after securing a third term in June.

Through these Thursday walks, Mayor Fregonese not only prioritizes his health but also fosters a sense of community engagement, inviting constituents and walking enthusiasts to join him in exploring the beautiful landscapes of Valdobbiadene.
