Throughout much of the year, the fresh water produced primarily serves to irrigate the region’s lush orchards, nurturing a variety of crops such as oranges and lemons destined for consumers in Northern Europe. However, as the summer tourist season peaks, a significant portion of the water is redirected into the city’s infrastructure to meet the increased demand for domestic use, including showers and other essential services.
Ana Boix, the deputy manager of the Torrevieja plant, emphasizes the importance of this resource, stating, “We have a very high-quality water from a source of supply that is endless.” This facility stands as the largest desalination plant in Europe and is part of a growing network of similar plants along the Spanish coastline.
