The Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer will witness a unique approach to sustainability. The world’s top athletes are set to receive their gold medals on podiums made entirely from recycled plastic – a groundbreaking initiative by a local start-up.
The silver-colored Olympic podiums, created by the innovative company Le Pavé, are crafted from 100% recycled plastic sourced from discarded food containers. This eco-friendly design marks a significant milestone in Olympic history, showcasing a commitment to environmental responsibility.
Le Pavé, based on the outskirts of Paris, has transformed a former steel foundry into a hub of sustainability. Co-founded by Maurius Hamelot, the company has harnessed the economic potential of repurposing plastic waste to create essential Olympic infrastructure.
Notably, in addition to the podiums, Le Pavé has produced 11,000 bleacher seats for nearby sports arenas using recycled shampoo bottles and bottle caps. These colorful and eco-conscious seats exemplify the company’s dedication to sustainable practices.
Originally a small enterprise with just three employees, Le Pavé’s collaboration with Olympic organizers has propelled its growth. With a staff of 34 and the establishment of two factories, the company symbolizes the vision of the Paris Olympic committee to host the greenest Games to date.
Embracing France’s burgeoning start-up culture, Le Pavé embodies the nation’s commitment to clean technology and environmental innovation. President Emmanuel Macron’s government’s supportive policies have nurtured a new wave of industries focused on sustainable development and a green transition.
