Kirkuk Statements from KRG Minister Aydin Mauf
Aydın Mauf, Minister Responsible for Ethnic and Religious Formations of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) and Executive Board Member of the Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITC), made important statements at the press conference he held. Mauf expressed his concerns about the current situation in Kirkuk and the local government, and emphasized that this step was unconstitutional.
Pointing out that the problems in Kirkuk cannot be solved by fait accompli, Mauf said, “We expect a management model in Kirkuk in which all ethnic and religious groups are represented.” Mauf stated that the current local administration, which does not include Turkmens, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and some Arabs, is incomplete.
Also touching on the KRG Parliament elections, Mauf stated that Turkmens will prepare with a separate list outside the quota to participate in the elections. He emphasized that this situation is important in terms of strengthening the political representation of Turkmens.
Minister Mauf demanded that the election law be changed after the KRG elections and that the number of representation rights allocated to each ethnic group be increased from 5 to 15. He added that he thought these changes would help better protect the rights of ethnic and religious groups in the region
