It was reported that fishermen, while on a fishing trip in the south of the island, drank the bottles they took out of the sea thinking they contained alcohol. The Sri Lankan Navy noticed the situation and tried to bring the fishermen back to land, but they could not intervene in time.

Susantha Kahawatte, Director General of the Sri Lankan Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Department, said the navy tried to intervene quickly but unfortunately could not save lives. Kahawatte said they were also trying to reach people who were under the influence of some of the bottles distributed to other crew members.
