Srebrenica Genocide Commemoration Events

Approximately 5,000 people, who participated in the “Peace March”, which was held for the 20th time this year, gathered in the town of Nezuk as part of the commemoration activities for the 29th anniversary of the genocide in which Serb troops brutally killed at least 8,372 Bosniak civilians in Srebrenica on July 11, 1995.

Turkey’s Ambassador to Sarajevo, Sadık Babür Girgin, also took part in the march. The march will last for 3 days on the forest road, which is also known as the “death road” among the massacres due to the public in July 1995, and the participants will reach the Potocari Memorial Cemetery on July 10, covering an average of 35 kilometers each day.

The Chairman of the “Peace March” Subcommittee, Suljo Cakanovic, stated in a statement in Nezuk that all technical preparations for the march have been completed. Cakanovic emphasized that in addition to Bosnia and Herzegovina, participants from Turkey, Iran, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Finland, Denmark, France and the Netherlands have also come to the march.

  • Efedina Cehajic, who came to Nezuk, said that she was joining the march for the first time and that they hoped to reach Srebrenica after all the difficulties.
  • Nejla Hodzic said her father was a Holocaust survivor and that this was his third time participating in the march.
  • Mustafa Ergün, who came from Istanbul, said that they joined the march with approximately 100 people from Turkey.
  • Yusuf Ahmet Kulca emphasized that he was participating in the march for the third time and that the genocide should not be forgotten.

The bodies of the Srebrenica genocide victims whose bones were found and identified were exhumed from 150 different locations. On July 11, 14 more genocide victims who were identified and whose families gave their approval will be buried in the Potocari Memorial Cemetery.
