Following the knife attack in Southport on July 29, there were incidents in the city. The far-right group gathered in front of the Southport Islamic Society Mosque and attacked the mosque by throwing rocks and bricks. Police intervened to try to disperse the group.

Merseyside police said the attack was carried out by far-right English Defense League supporters, who threw stones and bins at police, broke a police officer’s nose and set a police van on fire.

Merseyside Deputy Chief Constable Alex Gloss condemned the incident, saying it was “disgusting” that the community should be faced with such an incident at a traumatic time.

Police said it was useless to speculate about the suspect in custody, adding that the investigation was ongoing and the criminals would be brought to justice.

Following the incident, some social media accounts were seen sharing questionable information about the suspect’s identity. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stressed that social media companies must take responsibility and said speculation should not be believed.

The Guardian newspaper claimed that details about the suspect’s identity were spread through an unreliable news platform, drawing attention to the disinformation on social media.
