President Biden is striving to rescue his candidacy by urging Americans to reflect on the past. Since his disappointing debate performance in Atlanta two weeks ago, Mr. Biden has been emphasizing his accomplishments, stating, “Look at what I’ve done in three and a half years.” During a recent hour-long news conference, he highlighted his legislative achievements, challenging, “Can you name me somebody who’s gotten more major pieces of legislation passed in three and a half years?”

Despite Mr. Biden’s focus on his past achievements, many of his supporters, including Democratic voters, lawmakers, and strategists, are more concerned about the future. A majority of those who voted for Mr. Biden in 2020 feel that his attempt to campaign based on his recent record is not resonating. Representative Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat, emphasized the importance of looking forward, stating, “This is not about the past. This is about the future.”

He acknowledged Mr. Biden’s past accomplishments but raised questions about his ability to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election and serve another four years as president.

A recent New York Times/Siena College poll conducted after the debate revealed that approximately 74% of voters believed Mr. Biden was too old to effectively serve as president.
