The Current State of Travel and Covid-19

As we reach the peak of the summer travel season, airports, hotels, and attractions are bustling with activity. Airplanes and cruise ships are filled to capacity, and popular destinations are teeming with visitors. However, amid this surge in travel, Covid-19 remains a significant concern, with high levels of the virus circulating across the United States.

During the height of the pandemic, wearing masks was a common sight in hotels, airports, and various public spaces. Masks were mandatory for air travel, and many travelers opted to wear them in other settings to help curb the spread of the coronavirus. However, as mask mandates have been lifted and travel has surged back to or even exceeded pre-pandemic levels, many travelers have chosen to forgo these preventive measures, particularly in relation to mask-wearing.

With updated vaccines not expected until the fall, health experts are urging travelers to reconsider the benefits of masking, especially in airports and poorly ventilated indoor environments. Here’s what you should know regarding masks and your travel plans.

What’s Happening with Covid-19 Currently?

The number of reported Covid-19 cases is on the rise both in the United States and internationally. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), wastewater samples indicate “very high” levels of the virus across the nation. Furthermore, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a 30 percent increase in cases globally from June 24 to July 21, compared to the previous 28 days. In short, Covid-19 is still prevalent and poses a risk to travelers.

How Effective Are Masks? What Is the Best Type of Mask to Use?

Experts recommend that individuals wishing to minimize their risk of respiratory illnesses, including Covid-19, colds, and the flu, should wear masks while traveling. Even if you are the only person wearing a mask on a train or in an airport, it still provides a layer of protection—provided it is worn correctly, covering both the nose and mouth. According to Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, the Chief of Research and Development at the Veterans Affairs St. Louis Healthcare System, “It does not eliminate the risk, but it substantially reduces the risk of exposure.”

To maximize protection, opt for high-quality masks such as N95, KN95, or KF94. These masks filter out the vast majority of virus particles and significantly lower the risk of Covid infection compared to cloth or surgical masks. It is essential that masks fit snugly against your face for optimal effectiveness.
