NATO’s Support Plans for Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that NATO members will agree on a comprehensive support package for Ukraine. In this context, he announced that NATO will provide Ukraine with security assistance, training support, long-term commitments, new military support, bilateral security agreements and the capacity to establish a new base in Poland. Stoltenberg stated that all allies agree on Ukraine’s NATO membership, but it is unclear when it will become a member. However, he emphasized that Ukraine is getting closer to NATO membership every day.

Stoltenberg stated that Russia was focused on Ukraine and did not pose a direct threat to NATO allies. However, he emphasized the need for caution and said that they were closely monitoring Russia’s activities and continuing to strengthen their defense capabilities. Stoltenberg stated that Russian security forces were carrying out increasing sabotage actions against NATO allies and that information sharing and intelligence work on this issue had been increasing.

Stoltenberg stated that the US presidential elections to be held in November will not affect support for NATO. Emphasizing that a strong NATO is in the interest of the US as well as Europe, Stoltenberg said that the US has more than 30 friends and allies within NATO, which is not the case in countries such as Russia and China. Stoltenberg also stated that former US President Donald Trump’s criticisms of NATO were actually against insufficient defense spending and that this situation has now changed.
