Masoud Pezeshkian: From Healthcare to the Presidential Race

Massoud Pezeshkian was born on September 28, 1954 in the East Azerbaijan province of Iran. Pezeshkiyan, whose interest in the field of medicine and health has been evident since a young age, specialized in cardiac surgery with the education he received at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. Pezeshkiyan, who became a respected name with his rapidly rising career, was recognized not only as a doctor but also as a health politician.

During his term as Minister of Health, Pezeshkian carried out important reforms in Iran’s health system and developed various policies to increase the quality of health services, reach large masses and strengthen the health infrastructure. He took important steps in the field of health by implementing projects focused on protecting and developing public health.

Pezeşkiyan, who became a candidate in the 2024 presidential elections after his parliamentary duty, left the other candidates behind and became the name that received the most votes in the first round. In the second round, he will compete with Said Celili. Pezeşkiyan, who has been serving as a member of parliament for Tabriz since 2008, has also carried out studies on health policies in previous periods.

In the presidential elections held on Friday, Massoud Pezeshkian achieved remarkable success as a reformist candidate. According to the final results announced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Pezeshkian came first, receiving 10.4 million votes out of a total of 24.5 million votes. He will face his opponent Said Celili in the second round.

Pezeshkian’s election campaign was supported especially by former reformist politicians and ministers. Pezeshkiyan, who made a public voice before the public on Iran’s domestic and foreign policy issues, promised to regulate diplomatic relations and carry out economic reforms. Additionally, she took a sensitive approach to women’s rights and opposed compulsory veiling.
