After a turbulent week in the financial markets that reignited concerns regarding the resilience of the U.S. economy, investors are left pondering the next steps. Until recently, Wall Street’s primary focus was on inflation, with hopes that a decrease in inflationary pressures would prompt the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, thereby boosting stock prices.

However, the recent turmoil has introduced a new layer of uncertainty: the possibility that markets could react negatively to indications of a significant economic slowdown. For the moment, the markets appear to be regaining their composure. The S&P 500 index posted its most substantial gain in nine months on Thursday. Although it remains on track to register a decline for the fourth consecutive week, the decrease is minimal, marking a notable rebound after a global sell-off earlier in the week.

In the upcoming weeks, investors will face critical tests. New data on U.S. inflation is scheduled for release on Wednesday, which will be closely scrutinized. Following that, Jerome H. Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, is expected to deliver a speech at a prominent economics forum a week later. Wall Street will be eager to hear his insights regarding the market and the overall economy.

Additionally, earnings reports from major companies such as Walmart will provide valuable insights into consumer strength, a crucial component of the economy. The results from tech giant Nvidia will also be significant, given the substantial impact of technology companies on the S&P 500.

As the market navigates these uncertainties, investors remain cautious. “We’re not over this yet,” remarked James Stanley, a senior strategist at StoneX. “We’re not through the woods.”
