Los Angeles Looks Ahead to the 2028 Olympics

While all eyes are currently on the upcoming Paris Olympics, Los Angeles is already gearing up for its own turn to shine as it prepares to host the Games in 2028. The city is buzzing with activity as construction crews are deployed across the region, working diligently to enhance the infrastructure to accommodate the influx of hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Three major projects are at the forefront of this ambitious endeavor: the expansion of the rail system, the renovation of the airport, and the overhaul of the downtown convention center, which will serve as the venue for five different sports. These projects are not only pivotal for the Olympics but are also expected to have a lasting positive impact on the area’s infrastructure and economy.

The funding for these extensive projects comes from a combination of federal and city funds, alongside airport fees. Additionally, the anticipated influx of tourist dollars during the Games is expected to further bolster the local economy. The city envisions the Olympics as a significant revenue generator rather than merely an expense, and there is a pressing need to counter the skepticism surrounding the potential for a financial boondoggle.

Back in 2019, shortly after Los Angeles was awarded the Games, former Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed optimism about the financial prospects, stating his expectation for the city to make a profit of around $1 billion. This ambitious goal set a high bar for the current mayor, Karen Bass, who views hosting the Olympics as a unique opportunity not only to showcase iconic attractions like Hollywood and Venice Beach but also to highlight the rich tapestry of local culture.

“What truly determines success is ensuring that everyone benefits from this event,” Mayor Bass emphasized in a recent interview. “We want visitors to discover and connect with the vibrant small businesses throughout our city, including areas like Little Bangladesh, Little Ethiopia, and Little Armenia.”
