According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were hit by severe lightning on Wednesday and Thursday. As a result of this natural disaster, at least 43 people lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh and 20 in Bihar. In addition, 40 people were injured in the state of Bihar.
While health officials said the injured were in serious condition, meteorologists noted that large-scale lightning events during the monsoon months were unusual.
The IMD reported that 240,000 lightning strikes were detected on Wednesday and Thursday, not only in India but also in nearby areas such as the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Authorities warned that heavy rains are expected in the southwestern and northwestern parts of India for the next five days.
