Life on the Contested Island of Thitu
For travelers arriving on the tiny island of Thitu, the stark reality of China’s territorial ambitions becomes immediately evident. Dozens of Chinese ships encircle this small landmass, which is home to a few hundred Filipinos. Despite its geopolitical significance, life on Thitu is predominantly peaceful and unhurried.
Along the eastern shore, small wooden fishing boats are anchored beside a pristine white sand beach. The local dwellings, often constructed from an assortment of plywood, scrap lumber, and tarps, stand as a testament to the resilience of the island’s inhabitants. On a recent evening, a few locals gathered near the beach to skillfully debone freshly caught fish, while others explored the tide pools, fishing spears in hand.
However, beneath this tranquil facade lies the reality of contested territory. Just a stone’s throw away, China has deployed a flotilla of coast guard ships and maritime militia vessels, asserting its presence in the region. On a nearby reef, a military base has emerged, its lights twinkling at night like a distant city, casting a shadow over the island.
The increasing Chinese presence has raised alarms in the Philippines, which has maintained a presence on Thitu for nearly half a century. In response, the Philippine government is investing in the renovation of its aging military facilities located at the southern end of the island. This upgrade is part of a broader strategy to reinforce its claim to Thitu, known as Pag-asa, meaning “hope” in Filipino.
Furthermore, the Philippine government is actively encouraging more citizens to relocate to Thitu, with the belief that an increased population will bolster its claims and mitigate tensions with China. The dual strategy of enhancing military readiness while fostering a vibrant community aims to secure the island’s future amid rising geopolitical tensions.
