Lemon Harvest Started Early in Adana
Harvest of Mayer type early lemons grown on 230 thousand acres of land in Adana started 3 weeks in advance due to hot weather conditions. Çukurova Region provided 37 percent of the 1 million tons of lemons produced in the country last year.
President of Yuregir Chamber of Agriculture Mehmet Akin Dogan, explained why this year’s harvest started early with the following words: “The harvest process was brought forward due to the extremely hot and humid weather. The current price of old bed lemons varies between 50-55 liras per kilogram. However, the garden price of Mayer type lemons is 10-13 liras, while the market price is 20-25 liras.”
Condition of Bed Lemons
Doğan drew attention to the market dynamics by saying, “In 1 week, old bed lemons will be withdrawn from the market and only Mayer type lemons will remain.” “Lemons currently have a lot of juice but if we wait a little longer, we will observe an increase in the amount of juice in lemons,” he said.
Yield Decline
Stating that they expect a yield of 641 thousand tons in the city this year, Doğan said, “There is a 30 percent decrease in the yield compared to last year. The biggest reasons for this are the hot weather conditions and the uprooting of lemon trees “that were worthless last year.” However, despite this decrease, we have enough lemon production for both domestic and international markets.
