In a statement made on the social media account of the Tunisian Presidency, it was announced that President Kays Said issued a declaration for the presidential election on Sunday, October 6. The last presidential election held every five years in Tunisia was held in October 2019, and Constitutional Law Professor Kays Said was elected President with over 70 percent of the votes in the second round of the election.
The process following the 2019 presidential elections in Tunisia was quite eventful. The extraordinary decision announced by Tunisian President Kais Said on July 25, 2021 to freeze the work of the Parliament and lift the immunity of the MPs caused the political and economic crisis in the country to deepen.
After President Said expanded his powers and completely subordinated the executive branch to himself with the new declaration, he announced on September 22, 2021, a constitutional referendum was held in the country on July 25, 2022, within the scope of the “road map out of the political crisis” announced in December 2021. Early general elections were then held.
In Tunisia, where the presidential system was adopted with the new Constitution, the People’s Assembly and the Regional and Local National Council were established in the elections held on December 24, 2023. Most political parties in the country boycotted the elections on the grounds that they found the steps taken by President Said following the July 25 decisions “undemocratic.”
