By accepting this deal instead of waiting for free agency in 2025, where he could have potentially secured a five-year contract worth $269.1 million, Brunson demonstrated a rare display of loyalty and team dedication.
Despite financial considerations and the security an early extension offers, Brunson’s primary focus remains on pursuing a championship with the Knicks. The team can now plan for the future with Brunson under contract until at least 2028, ensuring roster stability and financial flexibility.
The extension includes various perks such as a 15 percent trade kicker, enhancing the overall value for Brunson and the Knicks. This strategic move by Brunson not only benefits the team’s salary cap management but also positions him for a potentially record-breaking contract in his next free agency in 2028.
