Amidst speculations about a nine-figure contract extension, Jalen Brunson found himself in a unique situation. The negotiations for the extension could only officially commence after midnight (ET) on Friday. However, even before the discussions began, Brunson had a strong inkling of the offer his team, the New York Knicks, would present him.

The Knicks were ready to offer Brunson the maximum they could within their salary cap constraints, despite it falling short of what a player of his caliber could potentially earn. Although Brunson could have waited until the 2025 free agency to secure a more lucrative deal, his attachment to the Knicks, admiration for the team, preference for financial security in the present over potential future earnings, desire to continue playing under Coach Tom Thibodeau, and camaraderie with his Villanova teammates influenced his decision to stay with the franchise.

When the clock struck midnight on Friday, Brunson had other plans in mind. Instead of rushing into signing the extension, he opted to spend quality time with his teammate Josh Hart, delaying the formal signing to enjoy the moment with his team.

The historic contract extension worth $156.5 million over four years, with $113 million guaranteed, solidifies Brunson’s commitment to the Knicks. By accepting this deal instead of waiting for free agency in 2025, where he could have potentially secured a five-year contract worth $269.1 million, Brunson demonstrated a rare display of loyalty and team dedication.

Despite financial considerations and the security an early extension offers, Brunson’s primary focus remains on pursuing a championship with the Knicks. The team can now plan for the future with Brunson under contract until at least 2028, ensuring roster stability and financial flexibility.

The extension includes various perks such as a 15 percent trade kicker, enhancing the overall value for Brunson and the Knicks. This strategic move by Brunson not only benefits the team’s salary cap management but also positions him for a potentially record-breaking contract in his next free agency in 2028.
