A new species of shrub belonging to the legume family, located in the Menderes district of Izmir, was introduced to the scientific world under the name “Izmirborçağı”. This important discovery emerged as a result of field studies carried out in the region between 2012 and 2023. Research center director Prof. Dr. Hasan Yildirim explained the discovery process as follows:

İzmirborçağı Keşfi

  • There are 43 species of the Chamaecytisus genus worldwide.
  • In Turkey, there are 10 species of this genus, 4 of which are endemic.
  • With the discovery of İzmirborçağı, the number of endemic species in Turkey increased to 5.

It is a local endemic species found within the borders of İzmirborçağı, Menderes district. This plant, which spreads in rocky areas of volcanic origin and in maquis, is found at an altitude of 245-315 meters above sea level.

Prof. Dr. Yıldırım emphasized that the species is critically endangered, stating that the plant’s natural habitat is exposed to threats such as forest fires and road construction work in the area. He expressed the need for urgent protection and action plans.

Ege University Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Budak also thanked the research team and expressed their support for their work.
