Israel has been escalating tensions in the region by increasing its attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023. Israel, which has recently entered into conflicts with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, aims to expand its strategic and military security areas. The country also aims to strengthen its water security by controlling the Golan Heights and the Litani River.
Changes in Water Balance in the Middle East
Stating that Israel’s attacks on Lebanon are critical for water security, Water Policies Association President Dursun Yıldız said that this operation will have significant effects on the Middle East’s water equation. Emphasizing that control of the Litani River is of strategic importance to Israel, Yıldız said that it could lead to changes in the borders in the region and reshaping of security balances.
Water Security and Strategic Plans
Noting that Lebanon is rich in water resources and has important water resources such as the Litani River, Yıldız said that Israel’s interest in these regions is directly related to water security. He emphasized that Israel meets a significant portion of its water potential from the Golan Heights and that control of the Litani River is part of its long-term strategic plans.
Lowdermilk Plan and Water Projects
Stating that the Lowdermilk Plan is among the projects implemented by Israel for water security, Yıldız said that this plan envisages the waters of the Jordan River being directed to Israel and aims to direct water resources in the region. He stated that Israel aims to ensure water security by distributing water resources throughout the country with the water carrier canal project.
