Court Monitor Investigates UAW President for Alleged Retaliation

A court-appointed monitor revealed on Monday that an investigation is underway regarding accusations against the president of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) union. The probe focuses on claims of retaliation against a vice president who resisted actions that were intended to benefit the president’s domestic partner and her sister.

Financial Misconduct Probe

The monitor, Neil Barofsky, initiated the investigation in February to look into potential financial misconduct within the UAW. The monitor’s request for access to internal union documents has been met with resistance from the union, leading to a legal dispute over the extent of access granted to the monitor.

Background

In 2021, a consent decree was reached to conclude a federal corruption case involving top UAW officials convicted of felonies, including former UAW presidents. The current UAW president, Shawn Fain, assumed office in March 2023 with a focus on reforming the union, confronting major U.S. automakers, and expanding union presence.

Recent Union Activities

  • Under President Fain’s leadership, the UAW conducted a series of successful strikes last year, resulting in significant wage and benefit improvements for members.
  • In April, the union achieved a milestone by unionizing a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, marking the first foreign-owned Southern plant to be unionized.
  • However, in May, the UAW faced a setback when unionization efforts at two Mercedes plants in Alabama were unsuccessful.
