India clinched the men’s Cricket World Cup title by defeating South Africa after a prolonged drought in tournament victories lasting over a decade. Despite India’s global dominance in cricket talent, financial resources, and influence, the World Cup win marked a significant achievement.

The tournament unfolded across various Caribbean islands, with select matches held in the United States, including a unique pop-up stadium in New York. The final showdown in Barbados witnessed India emerging as the champions, igniting celebrations back home as jubilant crowds thronged the streets in multiple cities.

Expressing his elation, Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, shared, “Maybe in a couple of hours it will sink in, but it is a great feeling.” He took a lap around the stadium with his daughter perched on his shoulders, acknowledging the roaring crowd. The victory was particularly poignant for India as many senior players, including the 37-year-old Sharma, were nearing the twilight of their careers.

India’s previous World Cup triumph in the T20 format dates back to 2007, a significant milestone for Sharma as he was just embarking on his journey in the sport. The coveted trophy had also eluded Virat Kohli, the 35-year-old cricket stalwart. Rahul Dravid, India’s revered coach, had never secured a World Cup victory during his illustrious playing career.

Sharma, reflecting on the win, stated, “To cross the line — it feels great for everyone,” as he announced his retirement from T20 cricket on the victorious night. Kohli also bid adieu to the fast-paced short format, marking a bittersweet yet triumphant conclusion to his T20 career.

Dravid, typically known for his composed demeanor, transformed into a jubilant figure post-victory, exuberantly celebrating the team’s achievement. The World Cup triumph not only marked a historic moment for Indian cricket but also symbolized a remarkable milestone for the retiring players and the coaching staff.
