Crisis and Humanitarian Situation in Yemen
Khalaf, the spokesman for the United Nations (UN) Office in Geneva, made important assessments of the crisis in Yemen at his weekly press conference. He stated that the long-standing conflict and instability in Yemen have led to a deepening humanitarian crisis throughout the country. Khalaf emphasized that millions of displaced Yemenis are facing increasingly deteriorating living conditions.
Khalaf said the majority of displaced families in Yemen are unable to return to their homes due to persistent violence, economic hardship and threats such as landmines, trapping them in a prolonged “cycle of displacement” and further deteriorating their standard of living.
The humanitarian situation in Yemen continues to be one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, Khalaf said. “While attention has shifted to other global emergencies, Yemen must cope with extreme challenges. There are currently 18.2 million people in the country in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, including 4.5 million internally displaced people. In addition, there are more than 60,000 refugees and asylum seekers, the majority of whom come from Somalia and Ethiopia.”
