High-Tech Reinforced Pressurizing System Makes Our Reactor Building Safe

The high-tech pre-stressing system provides additional strength to the concrete structures of our reactor building by tensioning the steel cable bundles. This system is also an important part of the containment safety system designed for overloads and their combinations.

The protective case can withstand an internal pressure of 5 kg/ cm2 , an external impact from a 30 kPa shock wave, and an aircraft impact. “Pre-stressing system will be checked soon for tightness and density”

“The construction and installation works of tensioning the steel ropes of the pre-tensioning system of the containment at the 1st unit have been completed. The pre-tensioning system increases the safety, durability and efficiency of our reactor building and the NPP as a whole. These complex works were carried out meticulously in accordance with all technical requirements. Akkuyu NPP specialists are preparing for acceptance tests to determine the durability of the parts. Also, the pre-tensioning system of the pre-tensioning shell of the 1st unit will soon be checked for tightness and density. “All modern Russian water-water power reactors have a hermetic internal and external pre-tensioning shell system,” said Sergey Butckikh, General Deputy Director of Akkuyu NPP.

Butckikh also shared the following information:
“Construction and assembly work for the assembly of system components has been ongoing since the beginning of the reactor building. During the construction of the inner protective shell, support chambers and channel formers were installed, then high-strength reinforcement ropes were placed inside them and filled with special cement mortar. After the building reached its design strength, 128 reinforcement rope bundles were tensioned, 68 horizontal and 60 vertical. Each steel rope was tensioned using hydraulic jacks with a tensioning force of approximately 1,200 tons.”
