The extreme heat that has been affecting different parts of Japan since the beginning of July has caused serious loss of life across the country. According to a statement by the Fire and Disaster Management Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, at least 19 people died of heat stroke in 14 prefectures between July 1-7.

Most of the cases are elderly

During the same period, 9,105 people were hospitalized with symptoms related to heat stroke. 5,378 of those cases were people aged 65 and over. Authorities warned citizens to stay out as much as possible and use air conditioning at home. They are also stressed that people should drink plenty of water.

Thermometers Show 40 Degrees

As parts of Japan struggle with extreme heat, temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius have been recorded in many prefectures across the country. On Sunday, thermometers in the city of Shizuoka reached the highest temperature of the summer, reaching 40 degrees Celsius. This was the highest temperature recorded in the city since 1940.
