As population growth continues worldwide, it has exceeded 8 billion people. According to the “2024 State of World Population Report” prepared by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the proportion of the elderly population continues to increase.
According to UNFPA data, populations in different parts of the world are showing an ageing trend. The proportion of elderly people is increasing, especially in Europe, North America and parts of Asia. This creates significant challenges for health systems, retirement plans and workforce dynamics.
While the proportion of the population aged over 65 worldwide was 5.5 percent in 1974, it will almost double to 10.3 percent in 2024. According to UNFPA’s estimates, this rate is expected to rise to 20.7 percent in 2074 and the number of people aged over 80 is expected to more than triple.
While developed countries already have the highest proportion of elderly populations, developing countries are generally witnessing a trend of rapid population ageing.
