The fire that broke out in a maquis area in Bursa and spread to the forest on Bursa Uludağ University (BUÜ) Görükle Campus was brought under control. The fire, which broke out for an unknown reason near Yolçatı Neighborhood in Nilüfer district, grew rapidly and spread to the grain fields on the banks of Ayvalı Creek.
After the flames were noticed, Bursa Forestry Regional Directorate and Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department teams were dispatched to the region. The fire, which spread rapidly due to the wind, was intervened by land and air. Four planes, four helicopters and one night vision helicopter were used from the air, and dozens of water tenders and work vehicles were used on land to intervene in the flames.
While students staying in dormitories on campus were evacuated, red deer, horses and other animals that were being cared for in their natural habitat were also moved to safe areas. Some of the patients who were hospitalized in BUÜ Faculty of Medicine Hospital but whose condition was not serious were discharged.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ahmet Gümen, Bursa Governor Mahmut Demirtaş and BUÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Ferudun Yılmaz inspected the area where the fire was taken under control and received information about the situation.
Students Moved to Safe Areas
Due to the fire, students staying in dormitories were evacuated and placed in other dormitories in the city center. Students are planning to return to their dormitories in the morning. Governor Demirtaş stated that the fire was brought under control and cooling efforts were ongoing.
Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that the investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out meticulously. It was reported that there has been no loss of life or serious material damage so far.
Rector Yilmaz: No Damage to Main Education Buildings
BUU Rector Prof. Dr. Yilmaz stated that the fire did not reach the main education buildings, that the animals in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine were moved to safe areas and that there was partial damage on the farm. Rector Yılmaz said that there was partial damage in an education building belonging to the Faculty of Agriculture, but that there was no damage to the main education blocks.
