Floods in Yemen: Refugee Camps in Marib Affected

Yemen'de Sel Felaketi: Marib'deki Sığınmacı Kampları Etkilendi

The Government’s Refugee Camps Administration Executive Unit has made an important statement regarding the adverse weather conditions experienced in recent days. The statement stated that the camps hosting displaced people in Marib were flooded as a result of heavy rain, storms and strong winds in recent hours.

The flood disaster has negatively affected the shelters of 7,179 families in various refugee camps in the province of Marib. In particular, this situation has caused the complete destruction of 2,973 shelters and partial damage to 4,206 shelters. Sadly, it was recorded that 4 people lost their lives and 10 people, including children and women, were injured as a result of these flood events.

The statement emphasized that shelter and food aid should be provided immediately to refugee families affected by the flood disaster, and drew attention to the importance of taking the necessary measures to protect the camps from natural disasters. In addition, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced yesterday that 57 people lost their lives, 15 people were injured and more than 34,000 families were affected by the floods in Yemen from March to August 9.

Over 4 million people have been displaced in Yemen as a result of the conflict that has been ongoing for the last 10 years. More than 2 million of these displaced people live in Marib. The internally displaced people in Marib face a great humanitarian tragedy in increasingly difficult living conditions due to their extremely low income.
