Floods in North Korea and Kim Jong-un’s Reaction
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with victims staying in temporary shelters to inspect the damage caused by heavy rains and floods in the northwest of the country, according to a report published by the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

By rejecting these offers of aid, he emphasized his confidence in North Korea’s ability to cope with this disaster. Kim stated that approximately 15,000 people are planned to be brought to the capital Pyongyang in the coming months and that he will support the victims in every way.

These countries have offered to provide relief supplies to North Korea for the flood disaster. More than 5,000 people were evacuated after the Yalu River overflowed on the North Korea-China border following heavy rainfall in the northwestern city of Sinuiju. South Korea’s Unification Ministry reported that the number of people killed or missing in the disaster in North Korea is estimated to exceed 1,000.
Kim Jong-un slammed South Korean media for fabricating reports about the extent of the flood disaster in his country, once again revealing North Korea’s stance on internal communications and information control.
