Incidents at Gölköy Dam Lake in Bolu
In Gölköy Dam Lake, which has an important place among Bolu’s drinking water resources, angling was banned for two years due to fish deaths in recent years. However, with a new decision taken by the Bolu Governorship, fishing permission was given in a 1.5-kilometer section of the lake.
The President of the Amateur and Sport Fishing Federation Serkan İnanç and the federation members came to Gölköy and observed the situation they encountered in the lake. The team, who encountered nets left by illegal hunters in the lake, pulled out meters of nets from the lake with the support of the Bolu Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry.
‘Fishing nets continue ghost hunting’
Serkan İnanç stated that they are fighting hard to ban the fishing line nets that are still underwater. İnanç said, “The nets currently in the lake are made of fishing line, which we call ‘killer nets’ and whose use we are fighting to ban in our country. These nets cannot be removed from the lake because they get caught in trees, and if they break, they continue ghost fishing. We did not have much opportunity to observe during the time the lake was closed to angling. We know that the nets that illegal hunters leave in the lake, especially at night, are collected in the morning. and that this situation has been going on for years.”
Faith emphasized that the prohibitions imposed by the state should not be violated, and he also stated that illegal fishers do not comply with these prohibitions. “In places where we are not present, it is inevitable that illegal fishing will reach its peak. In the coming days, with permission from the relevant institutions, under the supervision of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, we want to check whether there “are ghost nets left in the Gölköy Dam using underwater cameras together with our sport fishermen friends,” he added.
