Following the martyrdom of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh as a result of an Israeli attack in Tehran, where he was attending the handing over ceremony of Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian, the first assessments came from Iranian, Russian and American officials.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson:

İran Dışişleri Bakanlığı Sözcüsü:

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kenani:“Haniye’s martyrdom will strengthen the deep and unbreakable bond between Tehran, Palestine and the resistance,” he said.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia:

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov:“This is a political murder that is absolutely unacceptable and will lead to further escalation of tensions,” Bogdanov said, adding that the killing of Haniyeh would also have a negative impact on ceasefire talks in Gaza.

US Secretary of Defense:

ABD Savunma Bakanı:

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin: When asked if he could confirm the information regarding Haniyeh’s killing during his visit to the Philippines, he said, “I don’t have any additional information to give.” Austin stated that he did not think war was inevitable. He also emphasized that efforts would be made to reduce tensions in the region and to find a diplomatic solution.

Statements by the US Secretary of Defense:

  • Austin:“What we see along the border with Israel, along the northern border, is concerning to us. Again, we will do everything we can to prevent the situation from escalating into a wider conflict across the region.”
  • Austin:“Of course we will help defend Israel. You saw us do that in April. You can expect to see us do it again.”
  • Austin:“We don’t want any of that to happen. We will work hard to help ease tensions and address issues through diplomatic meetings.”
