A federal judge, Aileen M. Cannon, has decided to postpone deadlines in the classified documents case involving former President Donald J. Trump. This decision was made to allow prosecutors time to respond to Trump’s request for a broader pause following a recent Supreme Court ruling on executive immunity.

Trump’s legal team requested permission from Judge Cannon to submit additional documents supporting their argument for immunity. They cited the Supreme Court’s ruling in another case that provided extensive protections for a president’s official acts as the basis for their claim in the documents case.

Judge Cannon has instructed prosecutors from the special counsel’s office to reply to Trump’s request by July 18. Meanwhile, she has delayed two upcoming deadlines in the case related to expert witness filings and the defense’s obligation to provide discovery information to the government.

While these postponements may cause slight delays in the case, which has already been progressing slowly, Judge Cannon has not yet scheduled a trial date for Trump and his co-defendants. Given the unresolved legal issues still under consideration, it is unlikely that the trial will take place before the November election.

Judge Cannon’s decision to extend the deadlines, while not uncommon in complex cases, adds another layer of complexity to the already intricate legal proceedings.
