The Ministry of Transport, Economy and Climate Protection launched a project themed Power to the Road to create a fast-charging infrastructure on highways for electric trucks. Within the scope of this joint initiative, 350 fast-charging points will be installed, covering approximately 95 percent of the country’s highways. The total grid power will be 2.8 megawatts.

Public tenders for the planned 130 fast-charging points will be held at the end of the summer. The fast charging infrastructure aims to decarbonise heavy-duty traffic. Moreover, this infrastructure will be of central importance for Germany.

According to data from the Federal Motor Vehicles Administration (KBA), as of April 2024, only 2.1 percent of the commercial truck fleet in Germany will consist of electric vehicles. The country aims to decarbonise its transport sector by 2045.
