Deaths and Hospitalizations Rising in Japan Due to Extreme Heat

The extreme heat that has been affecting different parts of Japan since the beginning of this month continues to have negative effects across the country. According to a statement by the Fire and Disaster Management Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, at least 19 people died from heat stroke in 14 prefectures across the country between July 1-7.

Most Cases Occur in People Over 65

During the same period, it was reported that 9,105 people were hospitalized due to heat stroke, and 5,378 of these cases were people aged 65 and over. Authorities urged citizens to avoid going out as much as possible, use air conditioning at home and drink plenty of water.

The extreme heat that has been affecting various parts of Japan since the beginning of this year has caused temperatures to exceed 35 degrees Celsius in many prefectures of the country. On Sunday, the city of Shizuoka recorded a record high temperature, with thermometers reading 40 degrees Celsius. This was the highest temperature recorded in the city since 1940.
