Condition of Prisoners in Israeli Prisons
Israel has begun releasing some prisoners due to overcrowding in its prisons in the occupied Palestinian territory. Palestinian Moazzez Abiyyat, who was arrested in Beit Lahim nine months ago, was released emaciated and in torn clothes, showing signs of torture. Similarly, Moazz Amarne, who was released, was left without an artificial eye, which was implanted in a previous attack, and had health problems.
Prison Conditions Filled with Torture and Neglect
Abiyyat, who was released, described the prison conditions as “Negev Prison is like Guantonamo prison. Everything the mind cannot imagine. Killing, beatings, hunger, disease” and expressed the difficulties he experienced. Abiyyat also stated that he was beaten during interrogation by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Health Status is Worrying
Abiyyat’s health condition was very poor and he was receiving treatment. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Association stated that Abiyyat was suffering from health problems due to torture and abuse in prison and that he needed urgent support. It called on international human rights organizations to take action against Israel’s crimes.
Prison Policies in Israel
Discussions continue to be held over the release of some prisoners due to overcrowding in Israeli prisons. Following Ben-Gvir’s reaction to the release decisions made by the Israeli Internal Intelligence Service, a decision was made to build new prisons. While Ben-Gvir advocated the execution of prisoners, he ensured that budgets were allocated to improve prison conditions.
The Drama of Palestinian Journalist Amarne
Palestinian journalist Muaz Amarne, who was released by Israel, was suffering from health problems due to poor conditions in prison and was taken to hospital. Amarne had lost one of his eyes in a previous attack and his prosthetic eye was removed by Israeli forces. Journalist Amarne’s health condition was very poor and he needed treatment.
