CERD (Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination) has expressed its concerns about the Rohingya Muslims in India. In a written statement, the committee criticized India for the racial discrimination, forced deportations and arbitrary detentions against the Rohingya Muslims.
The statement said, “India must end racial discrimination against Rohingya Muslims and end the practice of forced deportation.” It also emphasized that Rohingya Muslims who will be sent back to Myanmar are at risk of human rights violations.
The statement drew attention to the increasing racist hate speech and harmful attitudes of politicians and public figures against Rohingya Muslims, and included the following statement: “Reports of arbitrary detention of Rohingya Muslims, including children, in inadequate conditions are alarming.”
The statement called on the countries party to the International Convention to condemn such actions, conduct investigations and impose the necessary punishments, and emphasized that discriminatory practices against Rohingya Muslims must end.
